A habitation reveals a vehicle’s true condition so that you can ensure the condition of the living area can be maintained. Leaving a problem too long can make it costly to fix. A habitation check is recommended annually. This is also a good idea as some insurance companies will not pay out in the event of a claim on the living area if you haven’t had your annual habitation check. Not only do we inspect the inside of your vehicle in our habitation tests but we also include an inspection on the underbody and bodywork of your vehicle.
What’s tested during a habitation check:
- Underbody
The security of the body to chassis mountings are checked. The cab to body junction and underbody tanks and auxiliaries are checked. The operation of the spare wheel is checked an lubricated as well as corner steadies and folding steps. With regards to the chassis, non-original suspension components are inspected, such as axle tubes (AL-KO) are lubricated. We have a specialist ramp which allows the axle to hang in the service position which enables us to lubricate the axle. Our motorhome/caravan technician has completed the AL-KO Service Training Course and is qualified to carry out warranty, service and repair work on AL-KO caravan chassis and running gear.
- Body work
The operation of door locks and hinges are checked and lubricated. Window seals and blinds are checked on the operation and condition. Body panels and the sealant condition is checked and reported if damaged. The floor is inspected for delamination. The security is checked on any body attachments (including ladders, cycle racks, lockers, aerials, satellite dishes etc.)
- Electrical systems
The operation of interior lighting and equipment is checked. This also applies for the fridge. The condition and operation of awning lights, outside pump sockets, road lights and reflectors is examined. Plugs and cables are tested and checked on the condition. Wiring, earth’s and fuses are inspected on the condition and made sure they have the correct fuse ratings. The fan master is also tested and the habitation battery is checked on the condition, security, electrolyte level and the terminals are lubricated.
- Damp
We carry out a damp report and depending on the reading,# it could suggest that there is a potential leak in the system. Sometimes when your vehicle is kept in storage it can cause it to become damp and may just need to be ventilated, however depending on the reading we recommend another damp test 3 months after just to be sure.
Readings between 0-15%-Β No cause for concern.
Reading between 15-20%- Requires further investigation.
Readings greater than 20%-Β Immediate action. May be early signs of water ingress or evidence of moisture. Again it may be worth considering a recheck after 3 months.
Readings above 30%- Structural damage may be occurring and deterioration is inevitable.
- Fire safety
Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are checked. We check that the fire extinguishers are not past their replacement date and are the correct type. If fire blankets are present then the housing unit is checked to ensure that it is secure.
- Water system
The operation of the water pump, pressure switch and heater is checked and the grit filter is cleaned. The condition and operation of the taps, micro switch, valves, pipes and tank (if fitted) are checked. The water filter and housing that supports it is inspected for leaks and the filter is replaced if necessary. The toilet seat, flush and blade operation is checked.
- Gas safety
Appliances such as the cooker, fridge, heating and water system is checked to see if they’re working safely and efficiently. A gas leak test is carried out and the performance of the regulator is checked. A flame failure check is carried out to see if faulty. The cylinder’s security is checked and gas dispersal holes are checked for blockages. These should be well ventilated and kept clean.
- Ventilation
All vents are observed for potential obstruction and free flow of air. Rooflights are tested for secure opening and closing, cracks and leaks.
